For many older adults, receiving physiotherapy at home can make an assessment and a planned movement routine easier to fit into daily life. The right approach starts with an individual assessment, not a one-size-fits-all exercise list.
What a first home visit should cover
A clinician should understand the person’s current symptoms, medical history, mobility, daily routines and goals before recommending a plan. A family member or caregiver can help share relevant history and explain what has changed recently.
The assessment should also consider the spaces where the person walks, transfers, uses stairs or manages everyday activities. That context can make the plan more realistic than advice designed for a clinic alone.
- A discussion of current concerns, goals and relevant medical history.
- Observation of movement and everyday activities, within the person’s comfort and safety limits.
- Clear instructions for what to do between visits and when to contact the care team.
How families can prepare
Keep a list of medicines, recent reports, mobility aids and questions ready. Make sure there is a clear, well-lit space for the assessment, and do not move furniture or remove supports that the person relies on unless a professional advises it.
The most useful goal is usually functional and personal: getting up from a chair more confidently, moving around the home, or returning to an activity that matters to the person.
When to get urgent medical help
Physiotherapy is not a substitute for urgent medical assessment. Sudden weakness, new facial drooping, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or a serious injury after a fall need urgent medical attention.
Common questions
Can physiotherapy be delivered at home for an older adult?
It can be suitable when a clinician determines that home-based assessment and care are appropriate. The plan should be tailored to the person’s health, goals and home environment.
What should a family ask a home physiotherapy provider?
Ask who will assess the person, how progress and safety concerns are reviewed, what the plan includes between visits, and how the provider coordinates with the person’s doctor when needed.
